Carsten Höller

This autumn, CC presents Carsten Höller, one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists, in a major solo exhibition occupying two of CC’s largest halls.

The German-Belgian artist is known for incorporating elements from playgrounds, zoos, and amusement parks into his works, often presented alongside scientific research and experimentation. With a PhD in biology, Höller’s scientific background is central to his artistic practice, which explores experimentation, the body, natural science, and human behaviour. His large-scale installations engage, influence – even experiment on – the viewer, through carousels, slides, salt baths, strobe lights, scents, and more.

In the exhibition Reproduction at CC, Höller explores the theme of ‘reproduction’ from both a scientific and artistic perspective. Reproduction begins with cell division, and this principle of division forms the basis for a total installation in CC’s vast Hall 1. The hall will be transformed into a large, biology-based playscape where visitors are invited to crawl through the eyes of a die, and where slow-moving carousels and mirrored corridors alter our perceptions.

The second part of the exhibition addresses how our behaviour is encoded through regulation from an early age, and how memories from childhood become embedded within us. The exhibition is about reproduction in both positive and negative terms – about nature’s marvellous ability to create and recreate itself endlessly.

CC’s exhibition is presented in an exceptional partnership with Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, which will simultaneously host a solo exhibition by Carsten Höller. Together, the two exhibitions offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience one of the biggest names in the international art world through a wide selection of works, ranging from some of his earliest pieces to new, site-specific installations.

Carsten Höller was born in 1961 and lives and works in Stockholm.

Among his most significant solo exhibitions are: Bonn Slide, Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn (2018); Aventura Slide Tower, Aventura Mall, Aventura, Florida (2018); Y, Centro Botín, Santander (2017); Henie Onstad Sanatorium, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Høvikodden (2017); 56th Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2015); 53rd Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2009); Experience, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2011); Double Slide, Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb (2009); Test Site, Tate Modern, London (2006); 51st Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2005); and 50th Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2003).
