Carsten Höller

Reproduction

The exhibition

This autumn, CC presents Carsten Höller, one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists, in a major solo exhibition spanning two of CC’s largest halls.

The German-Belgian artist is known for incorporating elements from playgrounds, zoos, and amusement parks into his works, often in dialogue with scientific research and experimentation. Holding a PhD in biology, Höller draws on his scientific background as a key foundation for his artistic practice, which is deeply engaged with experimentation, the body, science, and human behavior. His large-scale installations involve, affect, and even experiment with us – through carousels, slides, salt baths, strobe lights, scents, and more.

In the exhibition Reproduction at CC, Höller explores the theme of “reproduction” from both a scientific and artistic perspective. Reproduction begins with cell division, and this principle of splitting forms the basis for a total installation in CC’s vast Hall 1. The hall will be transformed into a biology-inspired playscape, where visitors are invited to crawl through the eyes of a die, while slow-moving carousels and mirrored corridors alter sensory perception.

The second part of the exhibition examines how our behavior is encoded through regulation from early childhood, and how memories from our upbringing become inscribed within us. The exhibition reflects on reproduction in both positive and negative terms, and on nature’s remarkable ability to create and recreate itself endlessly.

CC’s exhibition is presented in a rare partnership with Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, which simultaneously hosts a solo exhibition by Carsten Höller. Together, the dual exhibitions offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience one of the most important figures in the international art world through a wide selection of works – from some of his earliest pieces to new site-specific installations.
