Weaving Lab
About
In August we will be warming up for the opening of the learning center CC Studio’s new premises, when the American artist Marianne Fairbanks and Weaving Lab invite everybody to give weaving a try at Copenhagen Contemporary.
Weaving Lab investigates and challenges the conventional take on weaving. The project aims to extend access to weaving and attempts to generate a dialogue that will open up new perspectives on textiles, community and making. The weaving methods adopted by Weaving Lab are based on rhythm, mathematical systems, meditation and materiality. Everybody is invited to participate and experience how contact with Weaving Lab’s materials and experimental techniques can contribute to the (re)creation of a new social space.
Weaving Lab is open to all, and anyone holding a valid ticket to Copenhagen Contemporary can participate free of charge. Drop by Refshaleøen – be it for five minutes or an hour – and weave, connect and explore with us.
Weaving Sounds
As part of their collaboration with CC Studio, Weaving Lab launches a special project called Weaving Sounds. For this undertaking each weaver chooses the music that will accompany his or her work on the loom. Weaving, in this case, may become a multisensorial experience forging a link between the hands at work and the musical experience.
Weaving Sounds has been conceived in a collaboration between the composer Joseph Adamik and Marianne Fairbanks. Weaving Lab was established by Marianne Fairbanks in 2016. Weaving Lab assistants are Kat Bunke and Erica Hess.
Marianne Fairbanks is a visual artist, designer, curator and assistant professor of Design Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Michigan. Her work has been shown internationally in venues including the Museum of Art and Design, NY, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Smart Museum of Art, Chicago and Museum London, Ontario Canada. Her work spans the fields of art, design and social practise. She charts new materials and conceptual territories to innovate solution-based design and foster fresh modes of cultural production.
Joseph Adamik is a composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist
and drummer. He is a former member of the experimental rock band Califone and the band Iron & Wine.
